Use different domain names.
Sometimes, a site is referenced by many different domain names. The .com, .net and .org versions, of a domain name, all point to the same website. This includes common mis-spellings or different keywords (sewing-tips and sewing-secrets are examples of possible combinations).

Different markets.
Reference your site by using different names. This targets different markets. For example, suppose you have a site about search engine optimization. You want to target both SEO and web designers. Thus, domain names, like seo.com and webdesign.com, make sense.

Any good webmaster knows a site needs to be referenced with, and without, the www.

Okay, so what's the smart thing to do? What if search engines compare a limited number of pages to check for duplication? Or, what if someone reported something? What if they check directly linked pages (although this is still a heck of a lot of overhead for very little benefit).

Often, search engines account for a hefty percentage of the traffic received by a site. In fact, sometimes the number exceeds 70 percent. So, it's wise to spend some time ensuring you are totally clean, when it comes to search engine optimization.

You want a technician from any search engine to examine your site, down to the smallest detail, and find no evidence of any kind of search engine spamming (attempting to get higher rankings by unethical means). This is absolutely critical to site survival, for the long term.

Some tips.
Here are some things to try, to avoid penalties, in the search engines.

Multiple domains.
Using multiple domains, to the same site, has a tremendous number of advantages. Take advantage of permanent redirection.

Set up a redirection, which is a 301 status code. It tells the browser "this page has moved, proceed to this page." The move is permanent. The spider knows about the redirection, with no possibility of misunderstanding. This enables multiple domains.

Republished articles.
Allow others to republish your articles. Imagine having records of over 10,000 of them, all over the internet, on thousands of web sites.

Send articles, to webmasters, in text format. The webmaster must then drop this text into their site. Usually, this requires some reformatting and shuffling around. Thus, the finished articles have the same text, but the formatting is very, very different.

This is a highly respected method of gaining a large number of incoming links. "I give you something (an article, i.e., content). You give me something (a link back to my site)."
